There’s something off about the poem. Horribly off. Kuku has a negative, unpleasant reaction to it. On closer, Essence-enhanced inspection, Nixie discovers odd… incorporeal snakes. Burger, the Creeper whose home their in, is physically okay… Mentally, he’s as good as gone. Vikky casts some counter magic on the infused graffiti, dispelling whatever sort of mental trap sorcery was placed on it.
With Sophia (remotely) announcing she’ll watch over the remaining Creepers and Shinto promising the team he’ll get in contact if he learns anything more about his missing people, the team mostly regroups. Carmen and Nixie head off to quickly paint over the graffiti left on their various doorsteps and discover something strange and unnerving at Gabriel’s office. Someone has completely edited the poem there, highlighting some words in silver paint(?) and omitting the phrase “of the fountain” altogether.
From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were — I have not seen
As others saw — I could not bring
My passions from a common spring—
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow— I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the some tone—
And all I lov’d — I lov’d *alone*—
Then — in my childhood — in the dawn
Of a most stormy life — was drawn
From ev’ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still—
From the torrent,
From the red cliff of the mountain—
From the sun that ‘round me roll’d
In its autumn tint of gold—
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass’d me flying by—
From the thunder, and the storm—
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view—
There’s seemingly no explanation of who did this, why, or what message they’re trying to get across, but it happened somewhat recently, and it’s the only graffiti that’s been altered.
Their fruitless attempts to glean SOME information out of these messages is interrupted by an unknown woman named Catherine, who comes with “important news from her boss.” According to her, the farce building up at the Boneyard is just a feint to distract them from the REAL trouble brooding elsewhere. Her boss apparently wants nothing to do with the group (“murdering thugs with their heads up their asses”) but doesn’t want whatever is not-brewing at the Boneyard to go down – which, in her words, is “Mass murder. Devastation. Terrorism. Burn the women, loot the sheep and rape the houses,” coordinated by the efforts of ‘inside-out’ sapes — Abyssals, headed by the Bishop of the Chalcedony Thurible. Their weapons – Abyssals, elite ghosts, Hekatonahires – will need a gate to come through that won’t choke-hold their efforts, Catherine warns, a gate that’s probably settled in a manse or demense nearby.
