The Storm Shack
The Storm Shack is the restaurant and cafe on the grounds of the Leeron C Jenkins Weather Museum. It is known primarily for its unusual wooden-and-glass structure and beauty during rainstorms, as the restaurant features many rain chains. Although the Storm Shack serves food only during the hours it is open, the exterior and interior are both open late. There is a single vending machine located on the exterior first level.
The Storm Shack was built by two retired construction workers and their friends as a pet project, sponsored by the museum.
The Storm Shack is a three-tiered wooden structure with some steel reinforcing. It features unusual glass walls and a glass ceiling on the uppermost level that make it ideal for watching weather from indoors. The foundation is raised and covered with treated and stained lattice-wood fencing. The first and second tiers are roof-covered and, as mentioned, partly indoor, partly outdoor. The outdoor seating remains under the roof and features a variety of wind chimes and rope as its decorating theme, but the most important aspect of its image is best viewed during rainfall, as the edges of the tiered roof feature rain chains of varying shapes and sizes. During heavy rainfall, the rain is directed downhill and into the lake. The third floor of the Storm Shack is not even a proper seating area, but is an open space with a standing room only ledge around its circular border; this open space is covered by a thick glass dome and permits a spectacular open view of the sky. The oculus, as it is called, is about thirty feet wide.
