Small Change

Cricket Rampage
Story 1 - Session 16

Deeming that their intervention is unnecessary, the team departs from Rampage’s attack on Pulse Arcade – except for Nixie, who takes off for the rest of the night to “do what she can” and Sophia, who stays behind to wreck it out with Rampage.

Everyone else goes out for burgers and eventually ends back up at Vincent’s manse to discuss what to do now. The matter of the portal to the dead at The Boneyard is foremost on their mind, though Spiralnebel is also worth thinking about. Unfortunately, none of the four really know what to do next.

After Rampage calls it a night, Sophia trails after her as a crow just for the sake of it. She turns up at a tall sky-scraper in the heart of central Thunder City, possibly Volcano‘s headquarters – or at least housing for its members. She’s unable to follow Rampage in but takes a fly around up top and discovers the rooftop has a full Japanese garden on it, building included – which she recognizes is the same one in the picture of the Japanese presumed sape found in Simon Carrel’s safe. When she lands, she hears a cricket – an anomaly at the garden’s height – but is chased off by an emerald-skinned sape likely to be The Shogun, Volcano’s leader.

She returns to the manse to share this information, suggesting the far-fetched chance that the cricket is the Japanese woman who might be a Lunar sape. She also brings up the oddity of the mystery driver simply convincing Kuku he needed a ride from the Boneyard to Pulse, and how both he and Vikky forgot how they ended up at Pulse in the first place. Marc comes up in the conversation, as everyone but Sophia has forgotten Marc is neither dead nor missing, as the oddity of forgetting something like this is highly suspicious. If the man who delivered them to Pulse is a sape like Marc is as coincidence suggests, why is he delivering them to Pulse?

Sophia is just about to call Nixie when a sudden knocking on the window alerts everyone’s attention. When Vincent and Sophia investigate, a cricket is found on the windowsill. Sophia snatches it, assuming it is, in fact, the Japanese Lunar sape, and goes through the motions of trapping it, threatening it and eventually smashing it under foot.

As it turns out, it really was a cricket and Ana’s quite the little prankster.

Rampage
Story 1 - Session 15

Still in The Boneyard, Nixie and Ana make a last sweep to see if they can find out any extra tips about The Boneyard Boys; all they find is a blind ghost. The group remains a while longer to try and determine their next plan of action, eventually declaring they’ve done all they could here and that they should leave so that Ana can call the cops come morning, so Nixie and Vikky can investigate the cosmology of the gateway to the land of the dead, and so Kuku can investigate The Boneyard Boys further.

As they leave, Sophia spots a man and his car hanging out by Vincent‘s. She warns the others and tries to distract him as a crow, but he effortlessly catches her. The rest of the group follows her up and the man supernaturally convinces Kuku that he needs a ride to Pulse Arcade – one of the places Spiralnebel’s Boris the Spider is affiliated with. Nixie gets in with Kuku (and the shoulder-riding Spider Vikky) while Ana struggles to take Kuku’s bike. Vincent drives separately and Sophia crows out to Pulse.

When they arrive, their mysterious ‘taxi driver’ takes off, leaving them to witness the destruction within Pulse. (Vikky and Kuku completely forget how they get to Pulse in the first place, while everyone else remembers.) Rampage has already destroyed much of the interior. Naturally, there is some initial confrontation – primarily from Nixie, who makes it clear she wants to stop and take on Rampage here and now. The rest seem less troubled by her destroying the place, since it’s supposedly owned by Spiralnebel. Sophia seems outright delighted and talks Nixie away from starting something with Rampage… only to seemingly start the opposite of Nixie’s intentions.

A Door to the Dead
Story 1 - Session 14

Combat breaks. The Boneyard Boys are easily chipped away, but when Sophia shoots their young leader, something blatantly supernatural engulfs him in an oily, black veil covered with hundreds of red eyes. Whatever it was disappears completely, leaving no trace of the boy. The team resumes picking off the rest of them, stopping only when one cries mercy. Ana suggests to let them go, Kuku disagrees, and Nixie tries to draw some more information out of the two left. According to them, they have no idea what happened with the boy (who was only a fucktoy for older members), and had planned on letting him mess with their victim (a trespasser   a man looking for a client).

In the meanwhile, Sophia looks into the caboose mentioned by the boy previously. Within is a disturbing, sickening amount of human remains   what’s left of numerous atrocities. After more pressuring, the two Boneyard Boys deny they had anything to do with the caboose or what went on inside it. They list off a few members (Buttdog, Ripper, Death’s Head) but claim they don’t know anyone who’s involved or where they can be found, and deny there’s a scheduled time to meet. Just as the two start to grow incredulous over their position, Sophia and Vincent end them.

They address the victim now: a certain Gabriel R. Dyson, attorney at law. He came to the boneyard searching for his client, Julie Akagi. He describes her, “She’s half-Japanese. Overweight. Brown hair. She has a masculine voice.” She’d filed a civic suit against a man associated with the Boys, David Houston, over property damage. He hands them his card, saying he owes them one, and is on his way.

Nixie voices a desire to check out the caboose for ghosts and notices a weird barrier at the mouth of the car. While she researches the answer, Kuku hacks into the police radios to see if they’ve been alerted to the area; they have not. Through various back and forth between Nixie and her contacts and Vikky and Book, it’s determined that the weird barrier is, in fact, a portal to the realm of the dead.

Nixie is certain that this portal has something to do with the prophesied Bloody Dawn, and the team try to determine the best methods for preventing anyone from coming near it: burying it, moving it, covering the entrance with heavy objects, etc. They decide against moving it for fear of the portal staying where it is. For the interim before they find a more permanent solution, Sophia secures the doors with rebar. After multiple requests from Nixie to destroy a cruciform statue found near the portal, Ana obliges, absolutely leveling it.

The team is left without a solid lead on what could happen next, where or when.

Boneyard Shift
Story 1 - Session 13

A week has passed since their party at the riverside, with supposedly little news of its result. Out of nowhere, Nixie emergency texts the group, asking them to gather at Vikky‘s ASAP. When they group, she announces she knows something terrible is going to happen: a serial massacre that would be come to known as the Bloody Dawn if allowed to happen. Nixie insists that they go over, together, to check out The Boneyard and prevent the Bloody Dawn – even if someone has to die to protect the city. Ana and Kuku seem initially hesitant, but they all agree to come. (Book even hides away in Vikky’s pocket.)

When they arrive, Nixie quickly notices a strange black mass and goes to investigate. They come across a group of six men and their trash-throned, young leader, as well as a roughed up, nervous, suited man. Despite their attempts to remain stealthy, the young ‘King’ notices their presence halfway through talking about some kind of “Shit and Blood” hazing ritual.

As Ana is the first he calls to, she exchanges a few brief words trying to deflect their interference. Nixie stands guard over the kneeling man. An awkward moment pursues, the result of which is Nixie drawing the (now grateful) man to his feet and pushing for combat.

And Now We Wait Part 2
Story 1 - Session 12

Regrouping the night after the Riverside Fiesta, the team of six discovers… not a whole lot about the results. The news has picked up on it, but there’s no word – or sight, really – from any of the syndicates. A car speeds by on the street below, catching a parked car and tipping over Kuku‘s bike; it is only slightly scraped, but Kuku is wary of coincidence nevertheless. Rampage, or Natalie Pena, the daughter of Volcano syndicate’s Don, the Shogun, comes up in conversation. The group briefly considers taking her on, but more or less agree to send the Greek’s goremaul to her in hopes to incite her namesake’s wrath upon Lightning or King syndicate.

With her link to Simon, Sophia learns that the Capo of King is ordering his people to lay low and NOT go after Volcano or Lightning until more is learned about what happened – specifically from agent Fish (presumably a Volcano), who was present at the riverside. It seems that Spiralnebel is now recently within Thunder City, too.

The team also discusses:

Codenames for future excursions | Nixie is Crow, Kuku is Unicorn, Ana is Czar (tentatively), Sophia and Vincent are Bonnie and Clyde, and Vikky is undetermined.

Camping | Vikky expresses a desire to camp sooner rather than later, so they all have the chance to see what she can do. Sophia announces she can’t go until Simon’s out of the picture or he’s no longer needed as an ‘in’ for King. After a brief, slightly tense discussion, the team agrees Simon’s not worth the trouble and will be disposed of, on Sophia’s terms, as soon as possible. Camping would ideally take place shortly afterwards and before their work at the riverside fully blooms.

To Kill or Not To Kill? | Nixie expresses concern/sadness at the thought of killing everyone within the Syndicates, and proposes that the group not be all-encompassing when it comes to taking down the syndicate members.

Serial Murderer | In addition to the report on the riverside fiesta, WMFB News reports a for-sure serial murderer on the north side of the city.

And Now We Wait
Story 1 - Session 11

As it turns out, Ana‘s abrupt plan doesn’t take very long to enact – as soon as she and her new Volcano ‘friend’ go to get into his getaway limo, Ana engages him in combat again. Sophia and Kuku back her up in the brief, intense combat that brings The Greek down, but not before he states, “Fuck you guys. Fuck your kind. Fuck everything you do. You are the worst kind of authority this world ever feared and it’s going to put you back out of its misery.”

With the last of their enemies felled (except for the three that got away: two Volcano thugs and likely a sape by the name of Fish), the group scours the blood battlefield. Kuku retrieves the Fat Fuck’s grimcleaver and The Greek’s goremaul; Nixie snags a white jade shellcaster; Ana discovers a few cellphones, wallets and a bottle of champagne; and Sophia indulges in the heart’s blood of the two felled Neosapiens. Kuku uses his innate powers to dissolve the Fat Fuck’s body, but leaves the beheaded Greek where he lays, head bobbing in the Timber River.

Back at Vikky‘s bookstore, the lot of them discuss what to do now that they’ve stoked the fires. Nixie brings up the grave matter of everyone’s future – met with some resistance on her suggestion that everyone buddy up and branch out in Thunder City to secure some trust in its citizens and help back themselves up against Spiralnebel. Sophia brings up Marc, who everyone else still thinks is dead. Explaining it’s the opposite, even with help from Nixie, is problematic.

The group parts with the intention to keep a close eye on the news in the following day, and get back together the following evening.

Riverside Fiesta Part 2
Story 1 - Session 10

The battle on the dock continues, this time with a freshly-born fire aspect Neosapien. The axe-wielding King syndicate fire aspect proves to be a quick little fucker, while the newborn is a nice challenge for Ana – one that doesn’t last very long, anyway. After a joint effort facing off with the King sape, Kuku (locked in epic head-to-head combat) and Sophia (firing on the fringes) bleed out his Essence. Sophia finally manages to land a hit, blasting right through the poor sap; it’s at this that he remarks (vaguely) on the nature of Sophia’s moonsilver rifle.

One last King mook fleeing from the scene (spared by an idly willful Kuku) runs into Nixie, and is then offed by Vincent. Having incapacitated the Neosapien she gave birth to, Ana is approached by the remaining Volcano sape; when he offers to pay them twice as much as Lightning is paying them, Ana agrees and takes off with him. The rest of the group lets her go, trusting (or hoping) she knows what she’s doing. With them gone, it’s just a matter of finishing off the axe-wielding sape, and silence returns to the dock – once the drug-carrying boat sinks into the Timber.

Riverside Fiesta
Story 1 - Session 9

T-minus two and a half hours until Volcano‘s drug shipment gets in, the group gathers at Vikky’s to plot out their next course of action. They decide that the best method to dissolve King and Volcano’s tentative truce s to start a deadly fight between the Volcano members on shipment duty and a group of King members – regardless if the latter is actually King or just the group in disguise. Ideally, the group would let one Volcano member live to tell the story it was King that sprung up on them. If King actually shows up to the dock (Sophia‘s intel on Simon Carrel prior to and after leaving for the dock at least hints he won’t be there), Sophia agrees to put on Carrel’s as disguise and pretend that the group is ‘reinforcements.’ Either way, King or no, the team agrees to put Sophia on sniper duty and make the first shot.

With that settled, the group dons masks and heads out: Kuku as a unicorn, Vincent as a squirrel, Nixie as a grim-reaper type, Viktoriya as a pigeon, and Ana and Sophia with boring ski masks.

Having arrived quite early, the group witnesses a lone cop (without a car nearby to speak of) patrolling the docks. Round about 10pm, a truck finally pulls up; a handful of men (and one burly woman!) pile out. A curly-haired man (most likely Elmo “The Greek” Stamos) supposedly pays the cop, who then leaves. The man comes to investigate the groups car, but Vincent successfully plays it off that they’re all on drugs at the time, and they don’t get any trouble out of it.

At 10:34, a riverboat pulls into dock, manned by a few more Volcano members and an older gentleman (most likely Pedro “The Fish” Hernandez). Sophia, on her perch atop the garage opposite the boat, waits a few more minutes before cracking off a shot at the now more obviously Neo Sapien curly-haired man, who retrieves his giant stone sledge. In the same moment, Volcano members open the garage, letting a number of King guys spill out onto the dock, led by a man wielding a cleaver axe. Chaos breaks out, helped further by the group rushing into battle as well – Kukunicorn with his baseball bat, Squirrelcent with his guns, and Ana with her fists. (Nixie and Pigeontoriya remain in the car.)

Volcano and King members drop like flies between the crossfire. The Sape leading King (an obvious fire aspect) shows a certain distasteful desire for bloodshed. The Sape leading Volcano (an obvious earth aspect) stands his ground to lead his men, though two abandon ship alongside the older man. Kuku defends himself against a flaming artifact axe with a mere bat. Ana goes pedal to the floor in a flurry of attacks, felling three men at once.

When she goes for her next target – one she has decided to spare due to the spunk he’s shown – he exalts.

Ad Hack for Shipment
Story 1 - Session 8

In the aftermath of their paranormal activity and Kuku’s beheading of the mook Luke, the group sets to cleaning up their mess and discussing what to do next. Though they don’t know much about Volcano‘s shipment that was mentioned in Simon’s email, they decide that the best plan of action is to disrupt that shipment and rough up the tentative truce between King and Volcano.

That said, they know nothing about said shipment other than the date it’s supposedly to take place on, June 1st, so they make plans to learn more about the occasion. Sophia trolls downtown for any idle words and finds nothing worth nothing relating to the shipment, though she does hear about he return of a vicious-sounding ‘Pena.’ Kuku intends to hack into a Volcano member’s e-mail to see if he can find anything there, but is unable to even find an e-mail address to use.

The next afternoon, most of the group gathers at Vikky‘s store to continue the discussion. Without an e-mail, Kuku’s job is significantly more difficult, so Nixie sets out to determine when and where the shipment will take place, and possibly who will be involved. While she figures out the time (which turns out to be between 10:35 and 10:39 PM the next evening), Kuku gets to work hacking. With a snap of his fingers, he’s able to access a Volcano server and pluck out a number of emails regarding to the following topics:

  • Boris the Spider (2 emails sent by Alejandro Peno)
  • Spiranebel (1 email that’s the same as above)
  • Sape (too many to be useful)
  • King (too many)
  • Shogun (a few, none sent from/to that name)
  • Tick-Tock (quite a few)
  • Nacho (a few)
  • Volcano-owned properties and resources; Simon Carrel; Slash; Rumba (no results)
  • Rampage pings two short e-mails, one from a Pedro Hernandez to Elmo Stamos. “I heard Rampage is back in town. She’s your overboss. Is that true?” And the reply, “Unfortunately, yes.”

The emails can be viewed at Volcano Database Emails 1.

Elsewhere, as Sophia is walking around in town, a mysterious car pulls over for its driver asking what her destination is. Except that never really happened after all, did it?

Left Hungry For More
Story 1 - Session 7

After the hot mess left at Rush, the group takes their prize to an abandoned garage on the other side of town. Sophia tries to extract as much information from the King syndicate mook as she can, but it just seems there’s not a lot to be learned from him:

  • Simon ordered his team to bring Ziggy D to him (presumably alive) for unknown reasons
  • Simon had knowledge about where they might find Ziggy (The D Club, Euphorie, Rush and The Pink Flamingo
  • The group of mooks, on recognizing Vincent called home and were ordered to take him out
  • The mook group at Rush was the only group (knowingly) hired for the job six hours ago.

Having seemingly come to a dead end, Sophia announces she’s thinking of letting the mook, Luke, go so long as he stays mum at the same time Nixie speaks to something invisible in the corner. That “something” turns out to be a Hungry Ghost that promptly launches itself at Nixie, steering the group to combat. Kuku cleanly decapitates their hostage before he can escape while the rest deal with murdering the ghost. The ghost eventually ‘dies’ and dissipates, leaving the lot of them with a bloody mess to clean up after.
