Small Change

The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend
Story 3 - Session 2

With getting back to the syndicates on their minds, the group reconvenes, with Gabriel and without Ana (who is tending to some business matters). Nixie announces her hesitations of going straight for Shogun, and it’s decided that they still need to work on their tactic. Gabriel helpfully suggests that they recruit some ‘help’ to distract the greater part of Volcano while they take on its head: either Thunder City Dance Squad or the 8th Street Balas.

Both have their advantages and drawbacks. TCDS has two known neo sapiens within their rank and might actually be good candidates for true allies; there also aren’t many of them, and it will be more difficult to convince them to team up with the group. On the other hand, the Balas have quite a few more members (50-100 to judge by Vikky), no known neo sapiens among their ranks and can be (supposedly) more easily convinced to attack Volcano if promised their power. On the plus, if the highly violent Balas don’t make it out of the fight, it’s taking care of two bad things at once.

As it is, Gabriel has an old client who’s in with the Balas; TCDS would have to wait until the music concert next week, if anything, so the group goes for the Balas first. It’s off to Rush again to meet Gabriel’s unnamed contact.

Once there, Kuku and Sophia (who seemingly has recovered from her mishap the week before) work the contact together, announce their group is the one that took Rampage out, and ask to speak with the Balas’ leader. The contact complies once proof is secured, and they head off to the poorly maintained south side of Thunder City to meet the man: Caesar Amaro.

Caesar’s initial cool disbelief changes when Kuku summon’s Rampage’s hammer as proof they were the ones who took her out, but he’s still hesitant to team up with four (without Vikky-spider and Ana missing) unknown sapes to take down Volcano — so he offers an exchange. If the group can get him Lightning’s newest gadget…

Bad Moon Rising
Story 3 - Session 1

Gabriel states their best bet for a next move on the Syndicates is to either bleed their resources or act “dramatically, decisively, and precisely,” preferably where they’ve already made headway. He suggests that they go right for the big man himself, Shogun, making the argument that taking the leader will make the rest disperse or at least make him deflect resources into protecting himself instead of the smaller folk.

It’s generally agreed this is not a bad idea, though the matter of how to pull it off is less certain; Gabriel suggests that they work from the top down on Volcano’s headquarters. Without a reliable method to get up top (or get down for that matter) through charms or abilities, it seems the solution will be to ‘borrow’ a helicopter from Lightning syndicate and ride it up, with the added bonus of making Volcano think Lighting’s the one on offense. Gabriel tips off that there might be a warehouse on the East side they could scope out for one. As no one’s trained to fly a helicopter, Gabriel agrees to look into ‘lessons’ (read: study flight simulators) over the next week; Kuku agrees to look in to actual lessons “just in case.”

Gabriel takes off, leaving the rest (sans Sophia) to head back to Vikky’s place for food. After an hour with no call back from Sophia, Vincent voices a bit of concern. Given the trouble they’ve had in the past few days, everyone else is up for confirming her safety; Kuku triangulates the positioning on her phone’s GPS while Nixie asks Those Who Be and discovers, yes, they need to find Sophia immediately.

The lot of them truck it out to an old warehouse by the river, wherein they find a moderate amount of smashed crates, a small bit of fire, and Sophia sobbing hysterically – not unlike the Boneyard Boy they’d found earlier. She is nigh inconsolable, and suffering from severe dehydration when they arrive. Nixie makes a call to a contact to report and ask for advice while Vikky tries out a counter magic spell.

It’s not clear if it’s Vikky’s spell or Nixie’s pain-stealing touch, but something happens:

There’s a momentary sound like cloth being ripped. A burst of twisting, serpentine shadows suddenly erupts from Sophia’s form in all directions, slithering across the floor, darting under shelves, racing up the walls, fading into nothing. The building shudders slightly, the glass in the windows quaking and rattling. The flames flash green for a second and fade back to normalcy, the shadows they leave behind deep and lingering longer than they should.

Immediately, Sophia calms down and quiets. As Vikky’s glowing from the cost of her spell, she and Ana remain behind while Kuku drives Nixie, Vincent and Sophia back to the Sanctuary. When Kuku heads back for the two Russians, Nixie asks him for drinks and ear plugs, figuring that whatever happened to Sophia is aurally or performance related, thanks to Ana’s discovery of a simple, cheap guitar pick next to where they found Sophia.

There are many questions to ruminate over this unfortunate happening, particularly when Sophia is in no shape to discuss it. For now, all they can likely do is make assumptions and plan for multiple troubles.

Put Down the Beast
Story 2 - Session 8 | End of Story 2

The newly birthed Beast of Extermination cannot last long. Against six Celestial neosapiens, the unidentifiable neosape Jimmy has become still falls. Ana fulfills the finishing move. They have little time after he passes on before the cops arrive. On a lark, Ana and Kuku decide to stay behind to deal with the cops, hoping to spin their stories as concerned civilians instead of participants while Vincent and Vikky take off in the van. Ana clocks Kuku in the eye for authenticity’s sake. Sophia grabs a satchel full of armaments from the garage before taking off.

Ana and Kuku are, of course, arrested and brought in for questioning. Chief Irons himself takes notes during both of their separate statements, which they miraculously manage to coordinate. They claim they heard a bomb go off as they were leaving the area and rushed back only for some masked folks (three or four by Ana’s claim) to steal their van and take off.

Vincent and Vikky arrive at the Sanctuary of the Silver Lady after losing the cops – well, shooting them off the road. Vikky calls up Gabriel to inform him of what transpired. Soon after, he collects Nixie and they both head to the Sanctuary as well. Sophia arrives shortly, having gone to Kuku and Ana’s fake apartment to collect the hard drives Kuku hacked earlier. Ana and Kuku come in last once they’re released, without issue (seemingly) from TCPD.

The consensus is obvious: they did what was necessary, but it wasn’t a clean job – not that it was a routine job remotely. Gabriel has no idea about the strange exaltation, but he does recognize Jimmy’s armor as being the same kind the Street Knight wore. (Armor which, by the way, Ana felt a draw towards like she did her other artifacts.) Gabriel knows nothing about the Street Knight’s gang, however.

At the very least, with Jimmy out of the way, they can get back to their intended goals: kicking syndicate butt.

The Beast of Extermination
Story 2 - Session 7

Thanks to Nixie’s initial strike, the team is well into taking Jimmy out. Just as Ana and Kuku arrive back on the scene, Sophia takes the final, killing shot – or what would have been. Instead of Jimmy’s death, time completely stops. An old man in Catholic bishop vestments appears before them. “Life just isn’t fair, is it, child?” he says. “Thrust into a world you didn’t ask to be part of. Demeaned. Called terrible names. Forced to fight for your poor mother. And then, one day, put up by fate against relentless foes a poor, human being like you never stood a chance against.”

The mysterious old man addresses the onlookers frozen in time. “He was scared under that helmet, you know. He was crying. The job never stopped scaring him. You can hardly even imagine what that fear was like any more, can you?” And here, he smiles, beatifically, lifting one hand. “But it’s all right. You will. By my authority as The Shining One, The Great Diaconate of Silent Vespers, Lord of the Hidden Tabernacle, High Priest of Oblivion, I will rectify this cruel and unfair farce. I will give this boy an honorable name, and an honorable mission, and honorable power.”

And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

“By my authority, I knight thee, Beast of Extermination.”

Time resumes. Jimmy, who should be dead, who should have died, stands. Jimmy is a changed man, however. His polygonal vulture of an anima is only part of a testament to that. The battle begins again, this time against Beast of Extermination.

Beast of Extermination is a much tougher, much more adept foe than Jimmy was. He’s surprisingly resilient for how mangled his body must be beneath his metal armor, but he continues to fight.

Explosive Confrontation
Story 2 - Session 6

Everyone arrives at Chez Retard, preparing to confront and take down Jimmy. Before they can start, Nixie senses the sentience on premise and tries to inspect Jimmy’s mother, who turns out to be using an oxygen tank. This discovery makes Nixie hesitate on her initial plan to conk her out. In the interim, a policeman arrives investigating masked people hanging around the area. In order to avoid suspicion, Kuku shares a steamy kiss with Ana. The policeman tells them to shoo, which they do, somewhat reluctantly leaving the remaining four to take care of Jimmy while they secure an alibi to prevent themselves from being tied in with the future murder/missing person.

Nixie, Vikky-spider, Vincent and Sophia prep to open the garage door as soon as the policeman has bugged off. When they do, another bomb blasts them and the door. Jimmy – or rather, a robotic, red-eyed thing that might be Jimmy – waits for them behind. Thanks to her special invisibility, Nixie is able to take a nice chunk out of him before he blasts Vincent, Sophia and Vikky with bullet rain.

Complicated Hit
Story 2 - Session 5

The evening after the assassin mishap, Vincent’s text brings everyone together at Kuku and Ana’s new apartment. He hands off to Kuku a server rack that Sophia (now absent) apparently retrieved from the bank across from the Cathedral – the most likely point that Jimmy the Retard shot them from the previous night.

With relative ease, Kuku cracks the special video files and plays back the bank’s security footage for the prior evening. Hours before the group even went to the Cathedral, a strange humanoid figure with some kind of chameleon ability snuck into the bank and seemingly set itself up. Hours later, it exited the same way it came in – and left in a clearly marked vehicle out of the bank’s parking lot. Review of the previous nights shows that Jimmy had set himself up to watch the Cathedral on a nightly basis, from June 19th (the day after Rampage’s death) until July 5th.

Kuku hacks into the DMV and discovers via the license plate number that the car belongs to one James F. Owens, age 26. The file comes with an image and an address, which is located in a trailer park. However, as they cannot be certain James Owens is one in the same with Jimmy the Retard, they decide to call up Gabriel Dyson. In the course of their discussion, Dyson informs the group that James Owens was a client of his years back, and that he suffers from significant autism. The similarities between James Owens and Jimmy the Retard seem too coincidental, but Nixie asks FATE if James is who they want after all; sure enough, he is.

Though the greater part of the group feels some guilt for planning the death of an otherwise nonfunctional autistic man, it’s agreed that they must strike justice down on him physically instead of arranging his arrest. Tonight, Jimmy the Retard will die.

Birds of A Gold Feather
Story 2 - Session 4

In their separate groups, the six manage to make it without seemingly being tailed or shot at. The rumors of screams and the bell tolling by itself at the Olympia Theater don’t deter them from entering, though Boris stays behind to keep watch for Jimmy in the bell tower. Their secret safe house is not so safe once they get inside; a masked figure and flickering lights greets them within. The figure — not a ghost — offers its peace and a message of its intentions through a copy of Dr. Seuss’s story, Yertle the Turtle.

Surprise! The masked figure actually turns out to be, of all people, Gabriel Dyson. The group decides to share with Dyson that they’re aiming to take out the syndicates, that Volcano didn’t like that and sicced someone on them, and that they are Neosapien. Surprise again! Dyson is also a Neosape himself; in fact, he’s a Solar. This wins a bit more of the group’s trust, and they come to a loose agreement: Dyson will help them arrange a counter plot against Jimmy the Retard if they’ll help protect District Attorney Stephanie Morgan from getting herself killed.

Car Bomb
Story 2 - Session 3

The fully repaired Cathedral is, when the group arrives, seemingly devoid of the trouble they’re looking for. No syndicates, no Jimmy the Retard. In speaking with Raven, Kuku tells her to give Shogun a call to let him know they’re there. However, half an hour passes with nothing to say for it, so they decide to leave, knowing it’s highly possible they’ll be trailed. Their intended destination is Kuku’s new fake apartment.

The moment Vincent starts up his car is the moment the weird peace ends. The car bomb catches both Vikky and Ana fairly hard; the rest, miraculously, remain mostly untouched. They’re thrust full-force into panic mode, anti-personnel missiles raining down on them. The six split, Kuku shouldering Ana and heading down the street with Vincent, while Nixie carries Vikky beneath Boris-Sophia’s shadowy wing.

The first group’s attempt to steal and hotwire a car under the rain of bullets and missiles is rocky, until Vincent’s able to get things going. They take off and, to the best of their assumption, lose their purser. The second group retreats quickly to an abandoned store and, having suffered from no pursuing gun fire, are also seemingly safe. Marc has dropped his Nixie guise, confusing Vikky, and he alerts the others to meet up at the Olympia Theatre.

Cops and Hitmen
Story 2 - Session 2

The group reconvenes later on Tuesday night after a break from their earlier… disagreement. Nixie informs everyone that Volcano’s Shogun has hired a ruthless hitman by the name of Jimmy the Retard to find and take out whoever ended Rampage‘s life. It’s agreed upon that they be ‘caught’ by this man the sooner the better, to minimize future potential issues one might have from a man seeking you out. The plan is to return to the Cathedral and assume the guise of foolish start-ups looking for more trouble with the Syndicates.

Before that happens, Kuku decides to acquire an apartment for ease of mind. Ana moves in with him. It’s agreed that Kuku should root around for information on his sibling’s whereabouts so they can pinpoint them as the next target. Sophia mentions she’s following a lead to get more information on any of the syndicates.

On her way out after the group disperses, Sophia is confronted by the police and asked for her identification; when she refuses and is about to have her appearance scanned, Kuku flawlessly convinces/threatens the policeman to leave them be.

Friday night rolls around. Kuku has acquired his ritzy King-side apartment, so they are free to visit the cathedral, and that’s what they do.

Compromise
Story 2 - Session 1

Two weeks have passed since the group took care of Rampage. They gather again to address their next move on the syndicates. Before getting into it, Nixie wishes to address the supposed continue mass murders continuing south side. They don’t have to go far; Sophia fesses up to the crimes, explaining she was gathering additional forms for the future.

Unsurprisingly, everyone else is horrified by this, and raise immediate protest. A tense, heated argument follows, in which Sophia is begrudgingly willing to compromise the terms of fetching new human forms for herself (all future targets being ‘approved’ by the rest of the team) but Ana is not — until Kuku pulls her aside for a small discussion. Vikky seems wrapped up in thoughts about the warning from ‘her past’s ghost. Eventually, a compromise is agreed upon.

That done, they focus on their next steps with the syndicate: legwork to get more information on the various syndicates, likely by way of hacking, camera set-up and, more importantly, informants. The conversation rolls around on who to focus on next, and Kuku’s family is brought up; he claims his parents would be too much at the moment, but his siblings are more feasible targets (excluding the youngest). Potentially, Kuku can illuminate his parents’ embezzlement and let King take care of them for the group…
