Small Change

Time is Ticking
Story 4 | Session 2

While celebrating the death of Shogun is appropriate, Gabriel doesn’t let the group off on their own for too long before calling them back in to discuss their next step. He believes that since Volcano is already in a vulnerable state, if they were to pick off just a few more members – people with pride or seeming invulnerability – Volcano would be too shaken to come back from it. Additionally, they could cripple Volcano by removing its livelihood (its drug trade). Either process (the group decides why not do both?) will mark Volcano as an easy target for the remaining syndicates.

Gabriel also brings up the consideration of a manifesto: is the group ready to name itself and its goals, or is it better to remain anonymous for the time being, running the risk of the people or the syndicates giving them a name and a goal themselves? For now, the manifesto is put on the back-burner as the group focuses on who they should remove to cripple Volcano; Gabriel suggests Paola “Grindstone” and “Tick-Tock” as better options, to make it clear that this attack on Volcano isn’t just on the Pena family.

Nixie consults her Volcano man, Nacho, to see if he knows locations for either of them; she returns with the information that rather than Grindstone, the team should hit Velvet instead. Gabriel, through networking with low-status members, provides the team with Tick-Tock’s address.

With a quick recon mission to determine the state of Tick-Tock’s estate and Nixie’s check to make sure this is the right time to hit, then off they go.

In the Wake of the First
Story 4 | Session 1

Shogun is dead. Camillo Jr. and what’s left of his men have retreated. Volcano isn’t dead yet, though: Cheveyo’s men storm the first floor of Volcano’s headquarters to make off with Volcano’s goods… not without backlash, however. Cheveyo literally runs down the side of the building to pull back his men as they’re pushed back by a unit of beefy, armored soldiers from within the building. Elsewhere, Vikky leaves the scene of butterfly disaster to Marc and their mystery friend, who voices readiness to help, alongside Marc, the men who are still alive. Before Marc gets a chance to do much, Gabriel picks him up in the helicopter.

The team regroups at the Suns’ HQ, where a celebratory party is happenin’… without Cheveyo. Against his men’s protest, and with some help with Aya, the holed-up Cheveyo allows Vincent and Sophia in to see him. A tense argument occurs between Cheveyo and Sophia over the lack of warning regarding the assault on Volcano’s first floor. Afterwards, Cheveyo voices his concerns about the group and his involvement to Vincent.

The Fall of the First Pillar
Story 3 - Session 10 | End of Story 3

Nixie has determined the best time to strike. A day after their final meeting, it’s time to begin.

With perfect timing, the newly-known-to-not-be-actually-dead Marc takes up Nixie’s part in this plot, joining Vikky and the Suns at Casa del Sol Naciente. When Marc is informed that Sophia, Vincent and Gabriel have successfully filched the helicopter from Lightning’s warehouse (seemingly without a hitch), he gets to work making a (gentle) demand of protection money from the restaurant owner, who would have little to do with his nonsense. Above, Sophia confirms that an envoy of Volcano cars is on the way; the troops at Casa del Sol mobilize and prepare in what time they’re given. Vikky hangs back across the street.

Soon enough, Camillo “Junior” Marquez and his posse arrive, generously offering Marc the chance to apologize and get away (or so he says). Vikky becomes the focus of a mystery friend. Elsewhere, Gabriel drops off Sophia, Vincent and Cheveyo at the top of Volcano’s headquarters. In two places at once, combat breaks.

Despite having a slight upper hand, Camillo’s men are no match for Vikky’s sorcerous power; with one summon of obsidian butterflies, she incapacitates a great majority of Volcano’s soldiers; most of the rest flee in utter terror, leaving Camillo on his own. Marc allows him to make his retreat (to Vikky’s and Ayawamat (Cheveyo’s right-hand man)’s slight dismay).

On the other side of town, the respectable samurai Shogun is swiftly, brutally ended, brought down before the full power of his skills can be demonstrated.

Below, Volcano is in chaos.

Details, Details
Story 3 - Session 9

The group reconvenes at Cheveyo’s place to polish off the final details of their plan to hit Shogun. Gabriel joins them this time. They arrive, after some back-and-forth, that their best shot in getting Volcano to vacate their headquarters is to storm into the restaurant Casa del Sol Naciente, in off hours, and demand protection money – the idea being that Volcano won’t stand for this breech of territory when the owner is so closely connected to Volcano. (The owner’s daughter is a close friend of a Volcano general’s son.)

It’s also decided, almost unanimously, that recruitment of the TCDS should wait for a later date, due to time constraints, uncertainty over a reason for their agreement, and the proof killing Shogun will prove to them that the group is both committed and able.

The helicopter will be retrieved shortly before they storm the castle, as with no sure way to disable the GPS within, they’re at risk of being found before they have the chance to use it.

Everyone turns to Nixie to determine when the best time to launch their attack is. As she’s addressing all the variables, Marc comes up in conversation; Nixie leaves the room. Frustrated that she’s still the only one to remember Marc is not dead like everyone else believes, Sophia tries to explain the delicate relationship between Nixie and Marc, and conveys at the very least, once again, that Marc is not dead. Irritated, Cheveyo dismisses the meeting. When Nixie shrieks from elsewhere in the warehouse, Vincent and Vikky rush over to find she looks like she’s been hit by bus. She explains ‘mistakes she made are catching up with her’ and ‘not to talk about Marc, as he wouldn’t want that.’

Arranging the Distraction
Story 3 - Session 8

Before the group arranges to meet with Cheveyo again, Nixie and Sophia do a little separate intell on their own. Sophia assumes a pigeon form to do some spying; the only strangeness she can report is a dance-mixer that evolves into a strangely compelling dance ritual. She warns Nixie and tells the rest before Nixie heads off to speak with him alone; she reports her generally good vibe back to the group, saying she thinks Cheveyo cares a great deal about people.

They go ahead with their meeting, grabbing food from the Roadkill Grill for a picnic outside the Linger Lodge, and hit the ground running when Cheveyo joins them. There is some immediate tension between Cheveyo and Sophia, the former refusing to unfeelingly sacrifice his men and the latter refusing to focus on protecting them, should they join forces. With some navigation of the conversation, it’s agreed upon that, provided the power armor they got can be operated by mortals, they will go ahead with the original plan: distract Volcano and strike Shogun while he’s relatively alone. Cheveyo suggests that his men attack Volcano’s assets to make it seem like it’s a hit from another syndicate. Everyone (tentatively, in some cases) agree and head off to the Suns’ head quarters to see if the suits will even work at all.

A quick test run reveals the suits can be operated by mortals as well, fortunately. With their distraction seemingly secured, there’s just a little more preparation the group needs to do before they can take on Shogun – namely a helicopter to get them to the top of the volcano.

Dawn of a New Alliance
Story 3 - Session 7

The fight continues. Arachne-Vikky ends up looking worse for wear from a bad strike from the Bull, but otherwise holds up alright. Nixie brings reluctant demise to Guitar Wolf, fragile for all his musical prowess. Vincent picks off a would-be deserter and ends up blazing his true colors to avoid certain pain when the Bull turns on him instead, and Sophia is quick to put the man down as a result.

The warehouse is eventually cleared of its protectors, giving them the freedom to pack up the truck and ship themselves back to the manse. On the way back, Nixie makes a call to the Balas to inform Caesar they’ve picked up the goods, but gets an unfamiliar voice. With a little clarification and a new voice, she discovers that Caesar is quite possibly dead and that the Balas are under new management – management that is still interested in the deal they struck . They agree to meet up with this new leader three hours from then, giving them time to unload the truck, destroy it (courtesy of Sophia), and rest up beforehand.

Three hours later, Nixie, Vikky and Sophia turn up at the determined meeting spot. The Balas’ (or what used to be the Balas) new leader, Cheveyo has come to greet them wearing armor, an orichalcum scythe-harp (scytharp) and, if his nature wasn’t already obvious enough, a sun-emblazoned duster. He seems to make the wrong assumptions about the three of them on first blush, aggressively claiming them to be Syndicate members. This initial misunderstanding is tensely resolved before a fight can break out, with Vikky and Sophia both showing their own caste marks and telling him he’s not the only one of his kind. They go on to discuss their intended plan involving the Balas, and how their goals line up with Cheveyo’s. When he asks to be with them to take down Shogun in exchange for concocting them a plan to distract Volcano, it’s agreed that they’ll take information of their new found Solar ‘associate’ back to Vincent to discuss and come to an agreement on how to proceed.

Lock and Loll
Story 3 - Session 6

It’s off to Lightning’s warehouse for the four of them in their “borrowed” truck. Their arrival is met with near instant hostility. Nixie tries to inform the two sapes in lead of the ‘security breach’, posing as a representative for Lightning’s member “Fireworks.” It almost seems she has them believing her, too… until the big man known as Bull opts to call Fireworks. Before the guitarist named Wolf can comply, Vincent shoots the phone straight out of his hand.

In the resulting fight, Nixie makes ‘friends’ with Wolf, facing him off for a ‘musical’ battle. Vikky abandons her bat-post outside, crashing through the windows and landing as her giant half-woman, half-spider form. With the nature of their powers revealed, Vincent succinctly clears the room of the Lightning soldiers pestering them, while Sophia (wearing Boris) darts out of the warehouse to return with her real gun.

Keep on Trucking
Story 3 - Session 5

Vikky and Nixie ‘turn themselves in’ to the police and receive individual questionings; there are a few discrepancies in what they each say, but at least the police release them that night. They meet back up with Sophia and Vincent at Five Points Park, then retire to the Sanctuary to discuss the interviews, with Gabriel along as well. When Nixie recounts her interview, Gabriel informs her she’s made it very hard for him to help her and that it was a mistake to tell the police she was involved with violent criminal activity alongside Kuku. It’s agreed that they should come talk to Gabriel before speaking with the police in the future.

Their mission for the Balas is deliberated upon next: whether to continue without Kuku and Ana, whether they should change their plan, whether to abandon it and pick a different route… It’s decided that they’ll just go on as they planned: pick up a truck, clear out the warehouse of agents and pack up the goods. Nixie first humors the idea of sneaking in invisible and stealing the suits while the others distract the guards, but that plan is shot down.

She also humors a second idea of pretending to be a Lightning agent and coming to the warehouse to retrieve the goods because of a security breach. It may be a long shot, but everyone agrees it’s worth a try; the worst that could happen is they fall back to offing everyone within, right?

And Then There Were Four
Story 3 - Session 4

On his way back from securing a truck for their mission, Kuku receives a phone call from, of all people, Chief Irons; he quickly informs Mr. Obasanjo that a powerful group – not the syndicates – he is obligated to inform about ‘who and what’ Kuku is is after his life – and Ana’s. Chief Irons claims he doesn’t want that group to kill him, not in his city, so he gives Kuku the choice: the two of them can be arrested for the death of Jimmy Soloman and gain Chief Iron’s protection, or a much messier, more destructive alternative. Kuku’s answer is to hang up on him.

He returns quickly to the book store to very briefly inform the rest what’s happened and to tell Ana they have to leave, now. Not long after Kuku hangs up, the room is lit up by police lights. Outside the building stands the one and only Long Arm of the Law, with Chief Irons within demanding them to come out. In reply, Ana destroys the roof of Vikky’s living room, leading Kuku out to escape. Chief Irons is on them in a second, leading a brief but dramatic chase that ends when Kuku and Ana reach the former’s bike, tearing off to, potentially, never be seen again.

The rest, after a brief dispute, sneak out of the apartment over to Vincent’s manse to nail down their story for the cops. It’s decided that Vikky and Nixie will return to deal with the cops: while Vikky wished to stay and comply with Chief Iron’s ‘come out and hands up’ request, Nixie, who was more terrified by the Solar neosapien and the warstrider, convinced her to flee the scene. They knew Kuku and Ana were neosapien, but not what kind. For the purpose of their story, Vincent and Sophia don’t even exist.

What's Inside
Story 3 - Session 3

In exchange for the Balas’ help with Volcano, their leader Caesar asks for just one, tiny, little thing: word is that Lightning’s prepping themselves for confrontation with some new goodies, and he wants them. Though he doesn’t know what these goodies might be, he agrees that they’ll have the Balas’ help if they can get the goods. The group is (perhaps smartly) unwilling to take Caesar’s deal at face value and leave with the promise they’ll call if they really want the job and that, if they take it, the Balas will get half of the goods up front and the other half after they help out with Volcano.

Once they’ve called to confirm they’ll take the job and have received the address, Sophia and Vikky don animal forms (pigeon and bat respectively) to check out the warehouse. They find it’s an otherwise unremarkablely straight forward warehouse guarded by about ten men, mostly Asian, two sapes included: one casually wearing a guitar and the other an armored, hulking man of sizable proportions. The warehouse is, naturally, full of crates whose contents can’t be determined from outside. The two return back to Vikky’s bookstore to report these findings.

With the threat of two sapes on their hands and the problem of how much of the crates is full of the “new goodies,” not to mention the potential transportation issues of said goods, the need to determine what’s inside the crates surfaces. Sophia takes off again in order to sneak in as a rat and ‘see’ into the crates with her powers. She returns, without issue, to inform the rest that metal ‘power suits’ are within the crates – likely all fifteen of them, two to an eight-foot crate. Transportation and confrontation versus distraction becomes more complicated. At least, it is agreed upon that the Balas should not come into possession of these suits until they assist with Volcano, and so it’s decided that what they do take from Lightning (a portion if not all of the suits) will be taken to Vincent’s manse ‘to let the heat die down.’
