Small Change

Desire
Story 6 - Session 12

When probed about her… well, feeding habits, Esmee insists they all relocate to her dressing room, where other customers can’t overhear. The group is hesitant but agrees, and Esmee elaborates on her habits: she can exist simply on the emotional overflow of mortals around her. She speaks a bit about the nature of what she and the CEO are, and where they come from. It is possible to return “home,” but difficult. She suggests that the CEO may just as probably be weaving his children out of thin air than receiving them from ‘home.’

Their questions sated, Esmee offers her assistance in the future and bids them all to return whenever they so like. Or rather, she tries. Something Gabriel pulls off puts the woman’s composure off kilter, making for a very awkward exit. The group is in agreement to leave… except for Al who, having been completely smitten with Esmee and potentially reciprocally, angrily turns on Gabriel for ruining her chances. Gabriel informs the group (sans Vincent and Sophia who have snuck off for some hanky panky) that Esmee lied about only eating residual emotions and had attempted to use some sort of powers on them – which he had subsequently negated. Al is still up in frustrated arms until Gabriel takes her by surprise by asking her out on a date.

Story 6 - Session 11

La Dame Noire’s performance ends in due time, leaving the group to ponder how to approach her to talk. It’s just as it’s decided that Vincent and Sophia will sneak past backstage that the lady herself comes out and over to the group to introduce herself to the ‘fresh faces’. A few questions are asked of the lady, Esmee Fabron, which she is seemingly happy to answer: where were you born, why Thunder City, what’s your relationship with the not-human running Allegro Corporations…

Esmee doesn’t change once the subject of her existence is broached, and easily answers what’s asked of her. Her past with the CEO is rocky; he is, according to her, aloof, distant, and calculating. He’s in love with the city and he has many hungry children she is concerned of. She warns them to tread carefully around him. How does she exist here? By the residual emotions of others. Why did she come over to see them? Because she just simply had to.

Story 6 - Session 10

Armed with makeup, some new dresses, and some nice suits, it’s time to visit Euphorie. The bar is a cozy, ritzy little place with an apparent twist of pretending it’s a speakeasy. The group wanders into the basement where their target, La Dame Noire, is scheduled to perform.

La Dame Noire lives up to an exceeds the lead that brought them to the bar in the first place. Her appearance and performance both enthrall the crowd, and a good portion of the group. Nixie is treated especially in the middle of a song, to the ire of many people.

Story 6 - Session 9

Given a night to ask around, Sophia turns up with the name of the (or one of) most beautiful women in Thunder City: La Dame Noire, the owner of a place called Euphorie. A perfunctory web search turns up a site for a classy jazz bar. The next sensible step is to check the lead out.

There is some (and by some I mean quite a lot of) conversation on what level of dress should be worn to the club, and even more internal mental flailing when it’s decided ‘quite classy’ is the correct level. Gabriel invites Al and Carmen out to go dress shopping. Nixie has a tiny existential makeup head-splosion. Vikky is pleased with the chance to dress up. Gizmo is a doge.

The group returns ‘home’ to Vikky’s to discuss their bizarro run-in with the Corporate Fairy and the Tea Fairy. The conversation roams from neighborhood watches to “Thunder City’s most beautiful woman” being the CEO’s ex to maybe they can turn the other against each other to Nixie’s contact’s project’s findings to Vikky summoning a demon to keep watch on Allegro to what the fuck a bird speaking in New York English.

The Crumbling Cake
Story 6 - Session 7

Enter the CEO of Allegro: a man who is not a man, and a CEO that does not even remotely understand how an actual business is built and run. There is an aggravating amount of back and forth, where our heroes banter with the CEO in a round-about manner regarding his fake business and his fake person without touching on the real reason they are there.

Luckily, or unluckily, their banter is cut short by the familiar Tea Fairy of before, who is, apparently, the CEO’s son. Things continue to get weirder. The Tea Fairy claims Allegro Corporation is a refugee center. The CEO is displeased to learn his son has eaten another sibling (the woman with the butterfly tattoo). The CEO also keeps a pit full of “hungry brothers and sisters.” The CEO has numerous children, which he refuses to number. The CEO and his family cannot go home, because there is no ‘home’ left; the Tea Fairy elaborates such:

“Once upon a time, there was a beautiful, sweet, and adorable birthday cake. And there was never anything else. And everything was fine. The cake was happy, being the only thing that should have ever been. But then, the cake began to feel… ill. As the sweet, innocent cake became sicker and sicker, she began to crumble away. And more and more of her began to become things which were not cake. The cake was sad. But no one cared. Everything that was not cake continued to exist, right in front of her poor, innocent eyes. And everything was ruined forever. Eventually, there was nothing left of the cake but crumbs. But those crumbs remember.”

With no cake to call home, the CEO and his family have taken sanctuary in the Freehold that is Allegro. He claims he and his family can exist there without needing to prey on humans, and that he does not allow his family to do such – though his power to enforce this is finite.

The CEO is aware how exterminating him and his family makes sense from their point, so to help persuade them to not do just that, he swears, on his Staff and on Gabriel’s handshake, to (more or less) prevent harm to humans by himself or his family. He also offers information regarding another fairy that may be of greater concern to them: look for Thunder City’s most beautiful woman.

Corporate Hell
Story 6 - Session 6

It’s off to Allegro they go! Things are weird even before they get inside when Sophia informs the group the building’s just… hollow on the inside. Getting into the lobby doesn’t make it any less weird; a normal seeming receptionist tries to prevent them from entering in the only other door in the lobby, which leads to an elevator. Gabriel frightens the poor girl into thinking they’re FBI agents and up they go into the not-building.

Shit gets real weird. The first floor they stop on is a series of hallways with doors. That man is playing a watermelon. Santa is screwing a dead rabbit. That mirror is a lie, and your reflection wants you to come with her. Welcome to Corporate Hell. With the understanding (understatement) that they’re no longer in a normal world, and with the navigation help of Vikky, they ascend to the 40th floor, and then to the 1000th.

Sitting at the top is a great night view of Thunder City, a pristine office, and a man who is not even remotely passable for human.

Catch Up
Story 6 - Session 5

Back from their camping trip, Gabriel calls for a meeting to catch up. Before that, he half-announces, half-asks the group that he’s thinking about running for mayor!

They outline all they’ve done lately. The run in with Cheveyo, Candyland, meeting with Spiralnebel instead of Rhino, and finding Hattie. Gabriel is most concerned with the door to Candyland, but a severe lack of knowledge has left them with few options. Their best chance is for Vikky to do some heavy reading in hopes of finding anything helpful out. In the meanwhile, though…?

Sophia unwillingly brings up the fact that the bar they visited before Candyland (which she was not present for) was the same bar that sparked a series of flash backs into a former life, one of which involved seeing the Queen of Thunder herself, in the flesh. (The picture found in Simon Carrel’s safe months ago is, oddly enough, of the same woman.) Unfortunately, and perhaps unsurprisingly, the dialogue is cut short when Sophia and Al butt heads.

When said heads have cooled, the topic turns towards Allegro. Carmen does some digging around and notices a weird lack of information about the business. Nixie is certain it’s an illusion of some kind, and is nervous about all of them going at once; in the event of any potentially dangerous flashbacks, personality changes, or external mental influence, she establishes a safe word for when they visit the building the next evening.

Q and A
Story 6 - Session 4

The question session with Hattie continues. Nothing terribly conclusive is learned beyond some rather interesting history regarding “the Cruel Man,” the Celestial neosape who, so long ago, broke Malfaes. The story matches up close enough to Cheveyo’s, though the validity of it remains in question.

Hattie sketches out a detailed image of the man who summoned her, and a vague sketch of the building she came out of. Neither is enough information to go off of.

Though Nixie alone could spend the next decade asking more, eventually, the Q & A wraps up. Vikky desummons Hattie and sends her home with (presumably) no issue.

Far From Home
Story 6 - Session 3

During the last night of their otherwise uneventful camping trip, the group’s dinner is interrupted by a heavily covered person asking if they have any food. Said person is invited to sit around and chat for a while if they like – which basically amounts to Nixie, Al and Carmen bombarding the poor thing with questions to make sure their guest is really out here of their own volition.

As it turns out, no, they aren’t. After much prodding and poking around, they learn that their guest, “Hattie,” is actually a demon from Cecelyne’s city in Malfaes – a neomah, a weaver of flesh. She had apparently been summoned by a fat man with (only a little) stringy grey hair and a hooked nose. She completed her side of the bargain (which she declines to describe) but rather than returning to Malfaes like she assumed she would, the man instead drove her out – two hours outside Thunder City – and just… left her there.

In exchange for answering their numerous questions, they have agreed to banish Hattie back to her home city, though it’s a shame they have no leads on who would summon a demon and then drop them in the woods like a dead body.
